A teeny weeny new pump, about a quarter the size of existing pumps, is being readied for the market in 2008. Developed by Debiotech, the “Nanopump” will be made of two parts: a permanent part containing the electronics and a disposable skin patch with the reservoir and pumping mechanism.
The pump uses incredibly miniaturized MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) technology, which allows tight control of the pumping mechanism. Each pump actuation will inject only 200 nanoliters (0.2 milliliter) of insulin, bringing it very close to the amounts actually secreted by a healthy body. The Nanopump will also be able to detect occlusion and air bubbles within two actuations of the pump, quite awhile ahead of existing pumps.
Debiotech states that the Nanopump, because of its permanent electronics and its disposable reservoir and pumping mechanism, will be affordable to people who can’t swing a pump at current prices.
