Type 1 Pop Star, Nick Jonas Tells His Story

Nick Jonas is a personable boy of fourteen who happens to be a member of the Jonas Brothers Band, a group of three brothers with a devoted following of very passionate young fans. In November 2005, Nick Jonas found out that he had type 1 diabetes.

A month or two before he was diagnosed, he began to notice “the usual symptoms: losing weight, the bad attitude, being thirsty, going to the bathroom all the time.” He lost about fifteen pounds in two to three weeks, and “it was just insane.  I had a terrible attitude, which was totally odd for me because I’m actually a nice person.  Especially being on the road around people all the time, you have to keep that positive energy going. And it was hard.”

Nick took some time off from the band’s tour to see a doctor, who packed him off to the hospital immediately when she heard his symptoms.  His blood sugar was over 700.  “For someone who had no bad medical history ever,” he says, “to suddenly have the shock of diabetes was a bit overwhelming in itself, and then I had to learn all about it, learn all these things in such a short period of time.  All of it was crazy.  I also wondered if I could continue making music...but I had the support of my friends and the band to be there with me.  My dad was back at home with my three other brothers, but my mom stayed at the hospital with me every night.”

The day after Nick left the hospital, he performed in a concert and jumped right back into the flow of doing shows and touring.  He started out taking multiple daily injections of NovoLog with Lantus, checking his blood sugar about twelve times a day.  He says, “When we were on the road, I’d be in the back of the band trying to give insulin shots and manage my diabetes, and it was just too hard.  I was getting frustrated with it. I knew that I needed something different, a solution to the problem, which in fact was the OmniPod [by Insulet].  It’s really changed my life in a big way.  I started using it in about April and absolutely loved it.  And all my friends think that it’s a really cool device.”  He says he was shown other pumps, but he adamantly refused them all because he wanted an OmniPod.  He says, “Before I got the OmniPod, I heard about the other ones and they showed me examples and prototypes, but I was like, no, I want this.”

In his OmniPod, Nick uses NovoLog insulin. When he was touring and performing outside at up to 100 degrees last summer, he could set the basal down a little bit so he wouldn’t go low.  He reports that he hasn’t had too many episodes of low blood sugar.  “The past couple months have been awesome for managing my diabetes, and I’m doing well.  My A1c has come down a lot.  It is in about the 7% to 8% range, and it was 11% to 12% when I first was diagnosed.”

“What’s awesome about the OmniPod,” Nick says, “is that it works as a FreeStyle meter, so I just put the FreeStyle test strip in it. He tries to check about nine to ten times a day, and his blood sugar is usually 150 to 175 mg/dl.  He acknowledges this is high, but because he is so fit and active and has a tendency to go low, this is what he has been advised should be his normal range. His friends are very supportive.  “I’ll check my sugar and they’re all concerned, what’s it at right now?”  He’s thought about using a continuous monitor and may be using one soon.

Nick doesn’t follow any special diet. He can pretty much eat whatever he wants as long as he makes sure to take the right amount of insulin for it.  He is a huge steak eater: “I could eat all the steak in the world,” he says, but “I’ll eat pretty much anything.”  He notes that with the OmniPod, he can enter the carbs and it’ll give him a suggested amount of insulin.  It also has a food database, in case he ever has a question about how many carbs are in something. When he gets low, he prefers to drink orange juice or some other liquid because they work so quickly.

In March 2007, about a year and a half after his diagnosis, Nick publicly announced that he has diabetes at Carnival For a Cure, in an appearance sponsored by Insulet. He had known from the get-go that he knew he wanted to go public with his diabetes; it was simply a matter of when.  He notes that he’s still new to diabetes and feels “like a freshman coming into a senior’s class.”  He waited until he felt comfortable with managing his diabetes before telling everyone about it. Of course, he didn’t test in public until after his announcement, but now he tests wherever he is.

As an example of the intense scrutiny to which he is subjected by his fans, there is now a game on line called “Spot the OmniPod, ” in which fans examine old photos of him, trying to spot his pump.  Some of them write his name on their arm where he wears it. Everyone in his whole family has a fansite, even his father and his little six-year-old brother.

After Nick announced that he had diabetes, he says, “I found it amazing just how many people know somebody with diabetes or have diabetes themselves. We’d get these stories about how some of the kids were really afraid to tell their friends and how my situation gave them courage to do that. The fact that I’m able to have somewhat of a spotlight to share my story, I just feel blessed.” He carries a supply of guitar picks in his pocket, and “whenever I meet another diabetic buddy as I call them, I give them a pick, a cool little thing.”

Nick appreciates the fact that “I have a platform to be able to share my story.  I have this passion to be able to share with young people my age and be a positive light in a situation that might not be so positive.  I’ve heard stories about kids who were in depression because after they got diagnosed they were just so upset about what was going on.  That just touched my heart, and I wanted to be able to do something about it. I hope that I can be that positive light.”

Asked to describe the biggest hassle of diabetes, Nick tells about the times when it’s been a long day, and he has to go back and deal with some of the annoying things about diabetes.  When he gets a low blood sugar, “it’s like, oh, what do I do, and you just get kind of overwhelmed. That’s one of the biggest things for me.  And also when people don’t understand too much about diabetes and you have to explain.  I try to make it work.  I say, well, it’s a little bit different than you might have heard.”

Being on tour adds a dimension of difficulty to managing his diabetes because the schedule is “kind of insane.” It’s getting easier now because he’s been doing it a little bit longer.  “It’s a team effort and it’s all good,” he says. His mom travels on tour with him. His mom “is awesome.” She helps him with everything he does, especially in managing his diabetes. He takes supplements and vitamins because his mom favors them.  He describes his parents as his biggest influence, totally amazing people whom he’s blessed to have in his life.

He knows that diabetes “is a huge part of my life and I can’t just forget about it, obviously. I have to keep taking care of it and managing it, and learning more things about it.  Hopefully one day they’ll come up with some type of cure, and I hope I’ll be one of the first to know about it.

Nick comes across as extremely well-spoken and mature for his age. He describes himself as “more the quiet guy in the bunch,” not the kind of person who will just go up to somebody and start a conversation.  But “I consider myself somewhat of a leader, hopefully.” He is planning to be very involved with the diabetes community.  “This is just the beginning of what’s to come with all this.”

To newly diagnosed kids with diabetes, Nick would say, “Don’t let it slow you down at all.  I made a promise to myself on the way to the hospital that I wouldn’t let this thing slow me down and I’d just keep moving forward, and that’s what I did. Just keep a positive attitude and keep moving forward with it. Don’t be discouraged.”

Nick Jonas and his two older brothers, Kevin and Joe, form the Jonas Brothers Band.  They hail from New Jersey, where their parents were both musicians. Nick sings, plays guitar and drums.  The band is very popular with young girls, who have numerous fansites in which they declare their love for Nick and his brothers. Their first album, “It’s About Time,” was released in August 2006.  Their newest record comes out August 7, 2007, full of new songs.

Just the other day i was thinking to myself and i was like, i dont know what diabetes is and i only know two very important people in my life who have it, my grandpa and Nick... well i was thinking about doing a project on it. So Im gonna make a BIG poster and hang it on my wall. I LOVE YOU NICK!!!

Posted by anonymous on 28 October 2007

Hey Nick
I have been a huge fan of yours for a while now. When I found out about your having type 1, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but I was glad. Not glad that you have to deal with that but glad that I'm not alone. You see about a year and a half ago I was told that I have Insulin Resistance, there is an other really long name but I can't remember it, anyway it means that I have pre-diabetes. The doctor told me what to do to try and avoid it but even if it works I will still most likely get type 1 when I am about 20 or 25. When I found out I was in the doctors office and I couldn't stop crying. I was really scared because I didn't know anything about what was happening in my body and I hate needles so much I can get sick. I was really depressed and self conscious about it but when I found out that you had it I kind of woke up. I realized that diabetes is something that lots of people have, even you, and that God can help me through any thing. So thanks a lot for doing this interview and showing me that dealing with my glucose doesn't make me weird. It just makes me, ME. Thank you for being you and God Bless STIFFY
A SMILE A DAY! :)

Hey Nick,
When I heard you had diabetes I didn't cry, I did the exact opposite, I smiled. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not happy that you got diabetes but I am just glad that out of all the people you'd get it because you can handle it. I am also 15 and have had type 1 diabetes for 5 years now and am currently on the cozmo pump. It doesn't seem that long though, probably because 5 years isn't that long really. I don't like when people say they feel sorry for us because there is nothing to feel sorry for. I know they only say this because they just simply don't understand and I don't blame them. Of course I am a fan of your music but don't worry, I am not an obssesed fan that makes power points about you or leaves you weird messages on your MySpace(although I must say they are very entertaining to listen to). I don't even have a MySpace(you don't hear that a lot). I think of diabetes more as a blessing than a curse and I am not ashamed of being diabetic and never have been. It is just another facet of my life that I actually enjoy talking about. I have not been able to see you in concert because it has been very hard to get tickets, but I am determined to see you one day. Anyways, I wish you all the best and God bless you and your family.

Posted by anonymous on 9 November 2007

Hey Nick!
Well I personally don't have any kind of diabetes but I do have 2 family members and a few friends that do and they think that your absolutely right about just having to keep moving forward and never let it get you down.
God has obviously given you diabetes for a reson and it's up to you to be an examle to others on how you respond - especially because of the position that you are in. And I think that you have responded just the way he would have wanted you to. Just keep doing what you are doing and just don't let it get you down because it's like you said- " I think I see a rainbow from behind the clouds And I hear you now, dear God"

love,
-a friend
P.S. (i think you have an awesome voice!)

I have been a fan of the Jonas Brothers for about a year now and, i keep hearing this story over and over, but it NEVER gets old. it's actually really inspiring because, i was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 weeks ago and, he just really inspired me because, he doesn't let it slow him down AT ALL! he just keeps going. and, if he can do concerts, tour, do a T.V. show AND, a movie, then I can get through it. that's why Nick Jonas is my hero!

Nick, just a couple days ago, I was diagnosed as a diabectic.I'm really scared. I don't know whats going to happen, and i don't know what to expect. My friend told me that you had diabetes. So I got on the net and resurched you and found this. I think you are so brave for still making music in spite of your situation. And, as a diabectic myself, I now know from your example that I can still do the things I want to. Thank you so much. I am so thankful for you. :)

I've been a type 1 diabetic for 10 years, and it still amazes me how ignorant people are about this disease, and that goes for some of the stuff that's been said in some of these comments, it makes me feel better knowing that there are other people out there going through what I do, hopefully Nick can raise awareness for type 1 diabetes and this can all bring diabetics everywhere closer.

i think you are so cool. my dream has been to meet you.i didn't know 'til 2 weeks ago you had diabetes. my friend has diabetes so i sort of know what it is. i also read books about a girl who had diabetes. hang in there!!

Posted by anonymous on 28 November 2007

Nick,
I don't have diabetes but i know its hard for people who do have it alots of people in my family do so i could get it i don't want to have and when the doctor told me i could have it me and my family were very scared i didn't know what to do i didn't want to tell my friends because i would just feel like a different person and i know they would nt treat me the same as they do. I know alot of people that do have it and when they like come to school late and we'll joke with them saying like where were you playing hooky and their like no i was at the hospital really late last night and i'll ask them why whats wrong and they'll say they had a problem with their diabetes i am always like are you ok is their something wrong. And they sometimes they'll say i am like the only friends of theirs that cares about them. And what you tell people it helps alot of young people to see all that you do that your diabeted doesn't stop you and that it shouldn't stop them either! So i just wanted to say thanks for helping alot of people with diabetes and even people who don't have it deal with it!

Thank You Nick!
Breanna

Hey nick,
I have type 1 juvenile diabetes also. I was diagnosed November 2006. YOu have a big impact on me not just because I'm a 14 year old girl and your a guy but because I've always wanted to be an actress, but I thought that my diabetes would hold me back. Since I figured out that you, Nick Jonas, has diabetes my hopes raised a little higher.

Thanx, you rock! Say hi to Kevin and Joe for me.
Love,
Cindie

Nick,
I am amazed at how you took this situation and made a positive effect on young people with diabetes. I pray that God keeps using you in miraculous ways, as He has done up till now. You and your family will always be in my prayers. I am 15 and a lot of my family has diabetes, I am not one of them. You have shown a positive attitude for someone your age. Stay strong, I will always be praying for you.

Posted by Liv4Christ on 6 December 2007

Nick,
God Bless You and your family always!!!

Posted by Liv4Christ on 6 December 2007

Nick,
I am amazed at how you turned this situation, and made it good. By that i mean that you knew how to respond to it. For a person your age, you sound very mature in the way you spoke about diabetes. I am 15 and a lot of people in my family have diabetes. I know it is hard for them, so it must be hard for you since you are on tour. I pray that God keeps using you in the way he has been up until now. You and your family will always be in my prayers.

God Bless,

Day Castro

Hey Nick,
One day I saw your music video for S.O.S on the disney channel and thought it was amazing. So I decided to find out what the Jonas Brothers were all about. The first link that came up on google was a video of you on March 11th telling your fans about your diabetes. It truly inspired me, someone who has to deal with that and is still able to do what they love and doesnt let it get in their way is so amazing. Ever since I saw that video I became a huge fan and now I know so much about all 4 of you (Frankie). I know all about how you guys started up until what your doing now. (A big thanx to my computer). Then I decided to buy your Jonas Brothers cd (Bonus Jonas Edition). I absoloutley loved your music especially since I could relate so much to it. It inspired me to start writing my own songs too. So whenever I have a rough day or a tegular day I'll always listen yo your music or watch a funny video of you guys to make me laugh. So thank you for everything you've done. Keep writing and singing!
Thanx,
Nicole

dear nick,
i know your probably not gonna read this because you have so many other fans and your'e so busy but im gonna try anyway. first off i really wanted to let you know that your'e my HERO. i look up to you in so many ways : your talent, your kindess, your inspiration... like yeah, im one of those crazed fans but not just because of the many reasons most crazy girls are. i can imagine how hard it must be for you, juggling your career and this burden. my grandmother has diabetes too and its difficult because she has to watch what she eats and when and all that. seriously, how do you do it? well anyway, i just wanted to make sure you knew how amazing you are, gorgeous looks, great talent, sweet and an inspiration to everyone. i hope one day, i'll be one of those lucky people that gets to meet the one and only nick jonas, its the one goal i've set for myself before i die. there are so many other things i could have put in here, like how much i absoltuly love you, but so little space. so with these few words i hope ive gotten out as much as possible.
youres whenever you want :],
