Bristol Study Finds Growth of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Under 5 Years

Apr 3, 2007

Are Kids Too Clean?

A Bristol University study of 2.6 million people between 1985 and 2004 has found that the number of children under five years old with type 1 diabetes has grown by 2.3 percent every year, to one child in every 1000. That’s a five-fold increase over the twenty-year period. Meanwhile, the number of diagnosed kids under fifteen, which includes the most ages most commonly diagnosed, doubled during that time.

The researchers noted that the current increase is too big to have been caused by genetic factors alone. They conjecture that one reason for the increase might be better hygiene, which has reduced children’s exposure to infections that previously controlled immune responses. Other suggestions include changes in pregnant mothers’ diets, the decline of breast feeding, and increased pollution.
