Pump Therapy at Type 1 Diagnosis May Prolong 'Honeymoon'

Feb 1, 2007

Researchers in New York are saying that insulin pump therapy at the time of type 1 diagnosis “provides a positive experience … with excellent clinical outcomes and apparent prolongation of the honeymoon period.”

A study was designed to test pumping when started within one month of diagnosis of type 1. Twenty-eight newly diagnosed type 1s, average age of 12.1, were placed on pumps as early as within one day of their diagnosis. The researchers discovered that A1C levels declined from an average of 10.5% to between 6.5% and 7.4% over the next 18 months.

“Endogenous insulin secretion, measured by C-peptide values, remained stable during the first 12 months after diagnosis,” write the researchers. “There was no significant weight gain for the duration of the study at 12 months.”
