A rundown of the latest and greatest in insulin pumping

Continuing last month’s “What’s New” theme, we offer you a rundown of the latest and greatest in insulin pumping. Below are some highlights of developments to keep your eyes on.

Infusion Sets

Comfort Short Infusion Set

This 13 mm cannula from Unomedical is shorter than the 17 mm length on the standard Comfort set. The angled insert adjusts from 10° to 45°. There is a disconnecting set, with a clear window for viewing the site. Complete sets include tubing and cannula and luer lock tubing connection. The set uses manual insertion with no option for an insertion device. Check it out at Unomedical’s product pages at www.infusion-set.com.

Accessories

Pump Monocle

This item attaches directly to the pump to enlarge the text. It’s available in a variety of colors for $9.95 from Magnifics, Inc. For information, call (818) 248-2228 or visit the Web site at www.thephonemonocle.com.

Pocketlens

For the visually impaired, the Pocketlens can enlarge the pump screen characters. Manufactured by Itoya, this small magnifier can be carried in a wallet. It’s available in two sizes: 3 1/2" x 2 1/8" or 3" x 5 7/8". The smaller Pocketlens is the size of a credit card. To learn more, visit their Web site at www.itoya.com/pht/pocketlens_P.htm. It’s also available at Amazon.com and from selected camera and photography suppliers.

Groovy Patches

A unique way to accessorize and decorate the sterile pad that surrounds the Medtronic Paradigm Quik-sets. These are likely to be a hit with children, teens and some adults. See their Web site at www.groovypatches.com to learn more, or contact Groovy Patches at (877) 813-9369, or via e-mail at dklavon@groovypatches.com.

Pump Wallet

PumpWear, Inc., now has a line of Frio products to help keep your insulin cool, including the Pump Wallet cooler. Visit their Web site at www.pumpwearinc.com, or call (866) 470-7867 for information.

Aquapac

A waterproof pouch designed to keep small electronic devices free from water damage. The case used with a pump has a clear plastic front and wire-through casing to allow for full programming when the pump is sealed inside. You can see it under “Commercial & Industrial Cases” on their Web site at www.aquapac.net.

Podcasts

Animas offers downloadable “podcasts” of education programs as part of their continuing educational support. Visit their Web site at www.animascorp.com for a list of topics and instructions for obtaining the programs for your computer or your podcasting tool software (Odeo, iTunes, iPodder). Several programs are written and narrated by our columnist, Nicole Johnson Baker, who is a consultant for Animas Corporation.

OmniPod Insulin Management System

Be among the first to know when new information about this system becomes available from Insulet. Sign up at www.myomnipod.com/podWatch/ for the PodWatch.

Safe pumping!
