Where We Stand With Insulin Pumping and Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Apr 1, 2006

From the Spring Research Guide

An interview with Alan Marcus, MD, FACP, the global medical director at Medtronic Diabetes

What is the greatest advantage that MiniMed Paradigm insulin pumps have to offer to diabetes professionals and their patients who use insulin?

MiniMed Paradigm insulin pumps offer several advantages to healthcare professionals and their patients. “Smart” Paradigm insulin pumps assist patients by simplifying complex diabetes math and recommending insulin dosages. These smart pumps also keep track of insulin still active in the body, factoring this information into their dosing recommendations. The key benefit here is that patients are less likely to “stack insulin,” which can result in hypoglycemia. This pump platform allows patients to have access to the future as well: Paradigm customers can “pathway” to future pumps when they become available, such as an insulin pump designed to display real-time continuous glucose monitoring data.

What would you like to tell diabetes professionals about the Guardian RT Continuous Glucose Monitoring System as a treatment option for their patients with diabetes?

The Guardian RT Continuous Glucose Monitoring System is an excellent treatment option for adult patients, because they have access to valuable real-time glucose information every five minutes and can take action when glucose levels drift outside of the normal range. Patients are alerted when their glucose becomes too high or low; this is particularly helpful at night while a patient sleeps. Patients can also view trend information through reports to optimize their control. The Guardian RT system is currently available through a controlled market launch in seven cities, allowing Medtronic Diabetes to work on reimbursement and training and education materials. Product information is available; call (888) 206-REAL.

Where do you see pump therapy heading in the future, and how will Medtronic Diabetes be at the forefront of its evolution?

Insulin pump therapy will become one part of a total diabetes management picture that includes insulin pumps, glucose sensors, algorithm development and data management systems. We expect MiniMed insulin pumps to integrate both real-time glucose information and to have retrospective review capabilities with trends and patterns. Therapy management software (online and desktop systems) will then organize the informatics for a complete diabetes management offering. Medtronic Diabetes is testing sophisticated algorithms so that its insulin pumps can offer even more automation in the future, easing the burden for patients by creating an artificial pancreas.
