From the Spring Research Guide
Pump therapy in preschool children, according to researchers at Texas Children’s Hospital, is “feasible and safe.”
Ten subjects younger than 6 years of age who were receiving insulin injections were recruited. They were started on insulin pump therapy and were monitored again three and six months later.
“There was a 22 percent decrease in the BG variability, and a 13 percent decrease in A1C,” write the researchers. “There was a decrease in the 24-hour median number and duration of hypoglycemic episodes, as well as the median number and duration of nighttime episodes.”
“We found no statistically significant change in the Parental Stress Index (PSI) score.”
