Pump Therapy Safe and Effective for Pediatric Patients

Apr 1, 2006

From the Spring Research Guide

Spanish researchers claim that in most studies of small children with diabetes, insulin pump therapy resulted in improved A1Cs and a decreased rate of hypoglycemia without an abnormal increase in body mass index (BMI) and without adversely affecting psychosocial outcomes in young people with type 1.

“In recent years, recombinant DNA technology has been used to design insulin molecules that overcome the limitations of regular and NPH insulin,” write the researchers. “The efficacy of insulin analogues now available for multiple daily injection and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy in [type 1] has been established in pediatric patients.”

The researchers add that insulin pumps have improved since they were first introduced, and they suggest that pump therapy may provide an effective alternative for selected pediatric patients with type 1.
