For men with type 2 who suffer from erectile dysfunction, quality of life can decrease over the course of three years, according to the results of a recent study.

Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire about the presence of erectile dysfunction (ED) and their quality of life every six months for three years. Of the 1,456 participants in the study, 34 percent reported frequent erectile problems at the beginning of the study. An additional 192 participants developed erectile dysfunction during the course of the study.

“The onset of ED was associated with a further marked worsening in physical functioning, general health perception, and social functioning,” write the researchers. “The development of ED was also associated with a highly significant increase in depressive symptoms and a marked decrease in quality of sexual life.”
