Donald D. Dumoulin is the vice president and general manager of Diabetes Care at Roche Diagnostics

Dec 1, 2005

Meet the people who make a difference in the diabetes business community

What is Roche Diagnostic’s position in the diabetes care industry?

For more than 30 years, Roche Diagnostics has been a leader in the research and development of diabetes care products and services. Our Accu-Chek products and services are well recognized around the world for providing innovative blood glucose-management tools to people with diabetes, and we are the global leader in blood glucose testing. We also have insulin-delivery accessories in our product portfolio, and we will soon have an insulin pump system available, making us the only company to have both blood glucose-testing and insulin-delivery products.

In the evolution of blood glucose monitoring, how would you rank the Accu-Chek Aviva?

The Accu-Chek Aviva system is an excellent addition to our product portfolio, and we’re hearing very positive reviews from people with diabetes and healthcare professionals. The system was designed to provide users with the features that are most important to them. For example, the test strips feature a wide-mouth sample area, which absorbs blood quickly and easily, and is designed to fill the first time, allowing people to avoid the pain of retesting. The system also includes a new advancement in lancing, the Accu-Chek Multiclix lancet device. Unlike any other on the market, the Multiclix lancet has a patented drum with six preloaded lancets, which reduces accidental fingersticks because you don’t handle individual lancets. It’s truly a revolutionary product that is receiving excellent response from the marketplace.

What is the Circle of Care?

The Circle of Care is a community of patients, healthcare providers, patient care groups, employers, insurers, policy makers and others working together for better self-management of diabetes through collecting information, analyzing data and acting on key learnings. Blood glucose-monitoring products, insulin-delivery systems and data management decision tools continue to evolve, making it simpler and faster for patients to self-manage their diabetes. Product innovations, such as shorter test times, small test samples, alternate site testing and innovations in pump therapy and data management help improve the ability for greater control and assessments of glycemic status. It’s all of these elements working together for a healthier life.

What educational materials does Roche offer diabetes healthcare professionals?

Roche Diagnostics offers a free online continuing education series with tips on how to break down testing barriers and information on how advances in diabetes management can help healthcare professionals and their patients better manage their diabetes.

How will Roche continue to be a key player in the industry?

As a global leader in diabetes care products, we are continually monitoring the marketplace, developing innovations to meet the needs of people with diabetes and investing heavily in research and development. With Disetronic Medical Systems now part of Roche Diagnostics Diabetes Care, our product portfolio has been extended to include insulin pump therapy. We are applying our deep clinical understanding of both glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy to develop integrated products and services. Our Circle of Care concept brings all of these tools together with the goal of enhancing patient quality of life, achieving better clinical outcomes and creating economic efficiencies.
