The OmniPod Insulin Management System
The OmniPod Insulin Management System, which was introduced at the August 2005 American Association of Diabetes Educators Conference in Washington D.C, is a two-part system consisting of the OmniPod and the Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM). The System features automated cannula insertion, a fully integrated design including an integrated blood glucose meter that uses blood glucose test strips, and no tubing.
According to Insulet Corporation president and CEO Duane DeSisto, “The OmniPod System gives [people with diabetes] access to the best possible therapy, with increased lifestyle flexibility and at a price that makes sense.”
Like a conventional insulin pump, the OmniPod features fully programmable continuous subcutaneous insulin delivery with multiple basal rates and bolus options, safety checks and alarms. However, the OmniPod System features a fully integrated design with only two components: the OmniPod (which is worn on the body) and the Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM).
“Its fully integrated design eliminates the need to learn, manage, and carry separate infusion sets, inserters and reservoirs” says Insulet, adding that the OmniPod System makes CSII therapy “easier to prescribe, easier to teach and easier to learn.”
