Type 1s More Likely to Suffer from Dry Mouth

Type 1s who experience dry mouths may be displaying a symptom of diabetic neuropathy, according to researchers.
In studying 262 people with type 1 and 183 people without diabetes, they determined that people with type 1 diabetes are more likely to suffer from a dry mouth, or lower saliva production (15.8 percent of type 1s compared to 10.3 percent in the control group).
Dr. Paul A. Moore, DMD, PhD, MPH, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, and colleagues, who presented their findings at the American Diabetes Association's scientific sessions in June, also found a connection between impaired saliva production and diabetic neuropathy. Other factors also found to contribute to lower saliva production were cigarette smoking and consumption of 7.1 ounces of alcohol per week or higher.
