Ulcer Bacteria More Likely to Reappear in Type 1s

Aug 1, 2001

Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori), a recently discovered bacteria that causes inflammation of the stomach and may lead to ulcers, is more likely to reappear in people with type 1 than in people without diabetes, according to researchers in Rome, Italy.

Researchers, who presented their findings at the American Diabetes Association's scientific sessions in June, tracked the reinfection of H.pylori in 34 type 1 patients compared to 40 non-diabetic patients who had dyspepia (gastric indigestion). All patients had been diagnosed with the bacterial infection and were treated for it. When the patients were examined a year later, 38 percent of the type 1 patients were reinfected, whereas only five percent of the non-diabetic group had the infection.

The re-infected diabetic group was older and had higher HbA1c and insulin levels than the other subjects, factors which could have also contributed to the reappearance of the bacteria, according to the report. However, researchers attribute the immune systems of people with type 1 as the primary cause for reinfection.
