Eye Care and Vision Benefits
High blood sugar is known to cause a variety of eye and vision complications, including sugar cataracts, blurred vision, and retinopathy (the breakdown and/or leakage of small capillaries in the eye which can cause a decrease in or total loss of vision).
A study conducted by researchers at the Indiana School of Optometry found that normalizing blood glucose levels resulted in the resolution of cataracts and the improvement of visual acuity.
They also concluded that maintaining blood sugar levels within the normal range can limit or prevent detrimental changes to the lens of the eye (Journal of the American Optometry Association, July, 1993).
