Hi, my name is Emily. I have type 1 diabetes and I was diagnosed when I was in Kindergarten, I am now going into my sophmore year in high school. Being a teenager with diabetes hasnt been easy. Dealing with the normal issues teenagers have and also having to deal with the stress of managing your diabetes takes a toll on a persons body. When I go to my endocrinologist I hear what she has to say but in reality I know she has NO concept of what teenagers with diabetes actually go through because she hasnt been a teenager with diabetes in her lifetime. This is why I have decided to become a pediactric endocrinologist. I think I could benefit young children and teenagers like myself who have diabetes. As I sit and listen to parents, Friends, and doctors ecplain to me what I should be doing with my diabetes and how i should do this or that I realize that they havent been in my shoes and I have always just wanted someone there to talk to who has more experience with the disease. This way as a pediatric endocrinologist I can talk to children and teenagers who are going through the same issues I went through at their age and they can be sure they have someone who understands. |
