Sweet News: Doctors Say Sugar Intake Is OK for Type 2s

Including sugar in the diet plan for a person with type 2 diabetes may be beneficial, according to a recent study conducted by researchers in Canada.

Jean-Francois Yale, MD, and colleagues at McGill University in Montreal announced the results of a study in the February issue of Diabetes Care after they tested the effect of sugar intake on a group of 48 people with type 2 diabetes.

The type 2s were given two different meal plans:

  • A conventional plan containing no concentrated sweets
  • A test plan in which 10 percent of the calories came from added sugar or sweets.

The patients in the test plan showed a tendency to consume fewer calories overall than those on the conventional plan. Also, the test group ate less starch and carbohydrates.

The research team reported that weight remained stable. In addition, there was no evidence that consuming more sugar worsened one’s metabolic profile.

The researchers conclude that people with diabetes who incorporate sugar in their meal plans may develop better awareness of carbohydrate consumption, which could lead to maintaining a healthier diet.
