In a study conducted at the Northeastern Ohio University Medical College, the effect of aspartame (Nutrasweet) on patients with a history of depression was measured.

The study examined the difference in response between subjects who received 30 mg of aspartame per kilogram of body weight per day, and those who received a placebo. Due to the severe, adverse reactions observed in response to consumption of aspartame, the Institutional Review Board forced the study to end prematurely (Biological Psychiatry, July, 1993).

[Advisory Board Comment: I think it should be mentioned that NutraSweet is far more beneficial than detrimental to most people with diabetes.  – Nancy Bohannon, MD]
