According to Instrumentation Metrics, a manufacturer of medical devices, results of a recent trial demonstrated that a new non-invasive testing technology using light successfully measured BG levels.
The preliminary results of the multi-center trial, which concluded in March, were announced in a press release. Final results will be published by the end of June.
In the trial, researchers tested near-infrared (NIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy as a way to measure blood glucose in 128 subjects. Ninety-four percent of the responses were considered to be accurate after the device was customized to the user.
The process involves shining a low-level light into the forearm. The light is then reflected onto a detector, which translates the absorbed information into a blood-glucose value.
“Our encouraging preliminary data represents an important strategic milestone.,” said Donald Hetzel, PhD, president and CEO of Instrumentation Metrics. “We have embarked on a trial of this size and scope to leave no doubt that our technology is truly effective at providing accurate, non-invasive measurements of blood glucose over long time periods.”
