Models for Predicting Heart Problems in Type 1s Called Unreliable

Current models for predicting coronary heart disease in type 1s arepoor, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Cardiovascular risk prediction models are available for thegeneral population and for type 2 diabetes but may not be appropriate intype 1 diabetes,” write the researchers, “as risk factorsincluding younger age at diabetes onset and presence of diabetescomplications are not considered.”

An examination was done to account for the accuracy of currentlyavailable models for predicting coronary heart disease in type 1s. Theyargue that future research should focus on determining the risk factorsaccounting for the lack of fit and developing prediction models specificto this high-risk group.
