Link Between Second-Hand Smoke and Type 2 Diabetes Seen
In addition to the other negative effects attributed to secondhand smoke, a new report says it is also linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women.
The report analyzed data from more than 37,000 French women who had never smoked and did not have type 2 diabetes, cancer, or heart disease when the study began
When compared with women with parents who did not smoke, those with at least one parent who smoked were found to have had a significantly higher rate of type 2 diabetes.
The study, published online by Diabetes Care, suggests that being exposed to secondhand smoke in childhood is associated with a higher rate of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, encouraging smoke-free environments and urging compliance with smoking bans may be another approach to controlling adult-onset diabetes.
