Help with my partner who has type 1 diabeties

Hi everyone

I have been with my partner almost 3 years, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was about 3, her diabetes is pretty well under control, although she does have the occasional hypo, but this is getting less and less these days.

I am starting to worry about her as she is slowly gaining weight and is finding it really hard to lose any, if I mention exercise, she says she can't do any due to her diabetes, basically everything boils down to her diabetes, I understand some of it would be, but I sometimes feel it’s an excuse for not doing somethings. She spends her days on the sofa in front of the TV and she does not have a job, she does do some housework, but that is about the most exercise she has, we live in a flat so she doesn’t climb stairs at all, sometimes she will spend the whole morning in bed, again, she claims this is her diabetes.

She doesn’t eat very unhealthy, but she does snack on crisps and drinks and a large amount of diet coke. Due to my work, which keeps me busy 24/7, we do sometimes have take always, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week, but sometimes we go for weeks without, I do try and cook as much as possible.

I think she is around a size 16 now and slowly gaining more weight.

I am worried as I think if she continues, she will be bed bound and unable to do anything and this surely must have some serious effect on her health. I have bought her a exercise bike and some exercise steps, but she doesn’t seem to use them and if she does, it isn’t helping much,

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Anything I say to her, she thinks is an attack on her.

Thanks

If you have time escort your girl-friend to her next diabetic appointment and sit in on a session as a listener. Don't disclose to the doctor what she does and doesn't do. Next, find some easy exercises the two of you can perform as a team such as hula hooping, stretching, yoga, chair exercises, marching in place, tossing a volley ball to each other etc. Visit this site www.sports-hoop.com. I have this hula hoop which weighs about 6 pounds. 15 minutes of hula hooping per day burns many calories and trims the waistline. The hoop doesn't fall unless you stop it. Third, mixed mineral water with lemon or a little fruit juice to replace the diet Coke and drink it with her. Also, visit one the diabetic sites for a complete meal and prepare it as a team. In addition, you can replace the sugar subsitiute with regular sugar (just use less sugar, fat etc. ) I have nine screws in one ankle, nerve damage, and frozen shoulder. Exercise is hard, but I do what I can. My goal is to lose 1/2 - 1 lb per week. I record everything in a journal and if I screw up I keep trying. I weigh 151 lbs and want to lose 25-30 lbs by March 1, 2009. If possible, help your girl friend find a hobby or suggest she volunteer at a hospital once a week. Remember, it takes time and you have find a diplomatic manner of reaching her. Approach her with suggestions a little at a time. Keep in touch and let me know me how it works. monique
