Scott King, editor-in-chief of Diabetes Health magazine, has lived with type 1 diabetes for 33 years. While working as an insurance actuary, he used tables showing that diabetes shortens the lifespan of people with the disease. He and his business partner, Nadia Al-Samarrie, decided to do something about that. After starting a mail-order diabetes supply business in 1989, they realized that customers needed information as well as supplies. Soon “Diabetes on the Dial,” a radio show featuring interviews of world-class experts in the field of diabetes, was born. The demand for transcripts of the broadcasts was so high that before long, King and Al-Samarrie were publishing a monthly magazine, originally named Diabetes Interview.
Published continuously for 16 years, Diabetes Health magazine provides objective, sometimes controversial, but always balanced articles about living with diabetes. Consumers and medical professionals alike recognize the value of this niche magazine that treads where no other is willing to go. “Other magazines think people with diabetes can’t handle the facts, so they leave them out or oversimplify,” says King. “I find that people with diabetes want all the information they can get.” As editor-in-chief, Scott King has edited more than 4,000 articles about diabetes.
King is recognized as an expert on diabetes information. He has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal, Parade, U.S. News and World Report and Ann Landers. The magazine was a finalist in the 2004 Maggie publishing awards. An engaging speaker who “walks the talk,” King has addressed diabetes educators, Kaiser Permanente Hospital staff and patients. He has also been a speaker at the national Taking Control of Your Diabetes conference.
Dear Readers,
When my business partner Scott King and I started the radio show “Diabetes on the Dial” in 1990, we wanted to fill a gap we’d perceived in the information pipeline. We, and the rest of the diabetes community in San Francisco, didn’t have direct and quick access to cutting-edge information from the world’s diabetes experts. Today, diabetes patients, caregivers and researchers worldwide recognize Diabetes Health magazine as the essential resource for living long and well with diabetes.
Getting from there to here hasn’t always been easy. Our success has been, in many ways, unique. One reason for our success is the people who work with us. There is a difference at Diabetes Health magazine that you don’t often find in publishing: Diabetes touches the lives of every one who works here - some directly, and some indirectly. The common goal keeps us going. Another unique factor is your feedback and encouragement. You tell us what you need and want to know. And we listen.
The industry is taking notice of our achievements. In 2003, Diabetes Health magazine was a finalist for a “Maggie” award for Best Publication in the Health, Beauty and Fitness category. The Maggie competition, sponsored annually by Western Publications Association, honors excellence in magazines published west of the Mississippi River. The others in our category were Muscle & Fitness, Shape, Spa and Yoga Journal. It was an honor to compete with such prestigious competitors.
It’s gratifying to note the growth and development of our company and of Diabetes Health magazine. With diabetes an epidemic in the 21st century, we plan to continue our mission. Our new name, new design, new features and new Web site reflect our commitment to bring you the most current and useful information about diabetes every single month.
Sincerely,
Nadia Al-Samarrie
