Asthma Found to Increase Obesity Risk in Adults

While it has long been known that obesity increases the risk of asthma, a new study examined whether the reverse might be true – that asthma may lead to obesity. To assess this question, researchers from the Barcelona Institute of Global Health used data from 8,618 patients from 12 countries. None were obese at the start of the study, and those who were enrolled received follow-up exams at 10 and 20 years.

Data showed that about 10% of participants with asthma were obese after 10 years compared to 7.7% of non-asthmatic patients. Patients who had asthma without allergies and those who developed asthma as adults also had a higher risk of obesity.

These findings were presented at the European Respiratory Society’s International Congress on September 15, 2018.
