Show Your Support for Diabetes by Sporting Some Cool “Dog Tags” from Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from "A Little Bit Longer," the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes. The dog tag for people with diabetes has the lyric on the front, but also has the word "diabetes" on the back to document their personal fight against the disease.

World Diabetes Day, November 14, 2008
Today is not the first World Diabetes Day. This day was designated World Diabetes Day in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It has been celebrated each year on November 14 since then.

Olympic Swimmer Gary Hall, Jr., Jumps In For World Diabetes Day Swim-A-Thon
Gary Hall, Jr., an Olympic swimmer and ambassador of the Inspired by Diabetes program, will host a swim clinic in conjunction with Drew University's World Diabetes Day Swim-A-Thon on Saturday, November 15, 2008. The event, which begins at 10 a.m. with a two-hour clinic given by Hall, is followed by the swim-a-thon.

Four Winners with Diabetes Set to Meet Nick Jonas
The "Walk In Nick's Shoes" (W.I.N.S.) sweepstakes winners have been announced by Bayer Diabetes Care. Four Grand Prize winners have scored the opportunity to meet teen pop sensation Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. The winners will meet Nick Jonas in Los Angeles and walk as "Team Jonas" at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk for the Cure in Los Angeles on November 1.

November 14th is World Diabetes Day
Every year since 1991, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have designated November 14th as World Diabetes Day. In 2007, it also became an official United Nations World Day.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month
November is National Diabetes Awareness month. It's a good time to reflect on your blood glucose successes and have compassion for what you may view as failures. What's in a glucose reading anyway? It's just a number. It gives you feedback for a certain time period. Everyone struggles with maintaining good blood sugars. The important thing to remember is that you are not alone. In this issue, you will find everyday heroes who are committed to reminding other people that we are all in this together. Don’t Forget to “Step Out” to Fight Diabetes
This fall, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is inviting people across the country to "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes" by participating in their one-day fund-raising walk, being held in more than 200 cities nationwide. The routes, which range from two to six miles, will be accessible to people of all ages and levels of mobility. All along the walk, participants will be supported by volunteers offering water, snacks, entertainment, and enthusiastic encouragement. The event draws a large contingency of individuals and teams composed of families, friends, and corporation employees, all walking and raising money in support of the ADA.

If You’re Type 2, Remind Your Doctor to Check You for Symptoms of Depression
A recent study from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, said that patients with type 2 diabetes run a 52 percent higher risk of suffering depression than nondiabetics.

Checking Out Innovative Diabetes Products & Companies at the Children with Diabetes Conference
The exhibit hall at this year's Children with Diabetes conference in Orlando, Florida, from July 23 to 27, 2008, featured expensive and elaborate booths from well-known companies like LifeScan and large organizations such as the American Diabetes Association. But another kind of company also welcomed people to their booths. They were the diabetes start-ups, companies that were started more often than not because of an intimate connection to the world of diabetes. I spoke to representatives of five of these companies about their products, their mission, and their inspiration.
