Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but are not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
In pre-diabetes, fasting glucose values are between 100 and 125 mg/dl (impaired fasting glucose, or IFG) and/or two-hour glucose values after an oral glucose tolerance test are between 140 and 199 mg/dl (impaired glucose tolerance, or IGT).
People are considered to have pre-diabetes when they have either IFG or IGT or both. People with pre-diabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and for heart disease and stroke.
